Is Vaping Safe?

Lately, e-cigarettes have become a preferred format for those looking to make the switch from smoking in the UK. Whether you’re an experienced vaper or have just switched, you’re sure to have seen a range of contradictory advice around the health impacts of vaping and e-cigarette safety.

Is vaping safer than smoking cigarettes?

Vaping is a tool that can be used to  switch to a non-smoking lifestyle. E-cigarettes typically heat nicotine, flavourings and chemicals to create an aerosol that you inhale.

Research from John Hopkins University reveals that vapes contain thousands of chemical ingredients that are not actually identified. These unidentified ingredients could be potentially harmful substances, which could lead to toxic effects and/or respiratory irritation with continual use.

However, a report conducted by the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and Environment (COT), assessed the toxicological risk of nicotine and non-nicotine e-cigarettes in comparison with regular smoking, and found that whilst vaping is not risk-free to users health, smokers who switch completely to vaping can expect to reduce their risks of smoking related diseases.

Published in July 2020, this report found that:

  • Vaping is likely to be less harmful than smoking.

  • Vaping is likely to present low risks to those around you.

  • When purchasing vaping products, such as e-liquids and pods, users need to opt for reputable brands and sources only.

In February 2018, Public Health England published a study around vaping, stating that “switching completely from smoking to vaping conveys substantial health benefits,” with evidence supporting that e-cigarette use is associated with improved quit success rates in smoking across the UK.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in the United States have also confirmed that “e-cigarettes appear to pose less risk to an individual than combustible tobacco cigarettes.” Despite these positive indicators, this research cannot confirm the implications that vaping may have on long-term users.

Is vape smoke harmful to others?

Traditional smoking has been recognised as not just a danger to those smoking but to those around you, as the chemicals from tobacco can harm others through passive smoking.

A report conducted by the Population and Public Health Science department of the University of Southern California states that passive smoking via vaping may have some increased risks to respiratory health issues, however this research is yet to be substantiated.

Is it safe to vape indoors?

Ultimately, you get to decide if you want to vape indoors in your own home. Just like smoking, it’s advised that you should use e-cigarettes outdoors - but if you want to smoke in your own home, that is entirely up to you.

Can you use e-cigarettes whilst pregnant?

It is absolutely not advised to vape during any stage of pregnancy or breastfeeding, since nicotine is a health danger to pregnant women and developing babies. Using any form of nicotine usage whilst pregnant can cause damage to a developing baby.
