Travel Tips for Vaping Abroad
The rules around smoking in public places vary from country to country. For adult nicotine consumers who prefer vaping, the regulations can seem like a grey area in comparison. What are the rules for vaping abroad?
This guide explores possible vaping regulations in popular destinations, plus advice about where you can and can’t vape on holiday. We’ll also share tips for maintaining your vape device abroad so you can enjoy hassle-free vaping wherever you go.
Vaping regulations abroad
Vapes are still relatively new to the market, so it’s no surprise that countries constantly update their rules about where you can and can’t vape. It’s best to familiarise yourself with the laws in your destination before you get there. While no UK law currently bans vaping in public places, some governments have strict restrictions.
Where is vaping banned?
While some countries have different rules to the UK regarding where you can and can’t vape in public, others have banned the sale and use of e-cigarettes altogether.
Those that have banned vaping include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Mexico, Thailand and Vatican City. The penalty for vaping depends on your location.
Can you vape in Spain?
The Spanish government’s laws are similar to those in the UK; vapers should head to smoking areas in bars, restaurants and venues, while vaping is banned on trains, airports and children’s playgrounds. If in doubt, check with an official or member of staff before activating your vape in Spain.
Can you vape in France?
France plans to ban disposable vapes as part of its national anti-smoking plan, which means you won’t be able to use them here when the new law comes into place. Rechargeable vapes remain legal, but vaping is banned inside public places (including museums, restaurants, cafés and venues).
Can you vape in Italy?
Vaping is legal in Italy, with devices and refills available when you’re there. However, vaping is banned in some indoor places, including schools, public buildings and workplaces.
Vaping at the airport and on planes
Are you wondering how to get your vape from A to B and whether you can use it in transit? Passengers packing their Vuse device should keep it in their hand luggage; vapes aren’t allowed in checked baggage. Ensure it’s switched off and packed securely, so there’s no way it can accidentally activate inside your bag.
Your e-liquid refills are part of your liquid allocation when passing through security. That means they should go in your clear plastic bag to be scanned and can’t exceed 100ml.
Vaping on planes is banned by all airlines.

Vaping rules on public transport
Vaping is banned on all UK buses, trains, trams, and public transport stations. If you want to vape, head to the smoking area or move to an open street away from the station. Learn more in our ultimate guide to where you can vape.
If you’re visiting another country and considering vaping on public transport, check the laws where you are before activating your device. Most of the time, vaping isn’t allowed on public transport. If you aren’t sure, it’s best to wait until you get off.
Vaping in hotels
If you’re staying in a hotel in the UK or abroad, follow the hotel rules regarding smoking and vaping. If there are no specific vaping rules, treating your vape device like you would a cigarette is better. This usually means not using it inside unless you’re in a smoking room, which you can request in advance if the hotel offers them.
Vaping by the pool
Unless you’re visiting a country where vaping is banned, you should be fine to vape beside an outdoor pool. However, water and electronics don’t mix, so be careful not to drop or splash your device with water. Direct sunlight can also damage your vape, so keep it in the shade.
What happens if you drop a vape in water?
Like many electronic devices, dropping your vape into a pool could end its life; water can damage the coil and prevent it from heating properly. If your vape falls into a pool, remove it immediately and dry it in the shade. It’s unlikely to work again, so it’s best to have a backup vape if you plan to puff poolside.
Can the sun overheat a vape battery?
Yes! Direct sunlight can harm your vape, so keep it shaded on sunny days. This might mean storing it inside a case or keeping it in your bag when not in use. Exposure to too much direct sunlight can cause the battery to overheat and fail.
Vaping at the beach
You can vape on most public beaches unless vaping is banned in the country you’re visiting. However, it’s always a good idea to check for no-smoking signs when you arrive and be considerate of those around you.
