Vape Mythbusting: Debunking 7 Common Myths

There’s a lot of misinformation surrounding vaping and e-cigarettes, from how vaping compares to smoking cigarettes to the effects of e-liquids on your health. We’re here to debunk eight of the most commonly misunderstood vaping myths, so adult nicotine consumers can decide what’s best for them.

1. Myth: Vaping is as bad for you as smoking cigarettes

Vaping is considered an alternative to smoking for individuals who are either unwilling or unable to quit nicotine use. Unlike conventional cigarettes, vaping does not burn tobacco, which minimises exposure to harmful toxins. Instead, vaping devices use heat to vaporise e-liquid. However, it's crucial to note that vaping still carries risks because of the presence of nicotine, which is an addictive substance.

2. Myth: Vapes aren’t regulated

In the UK, vaping products, particularly those containing nicotine, are regulated under two main regulatory frameworks. These include the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 (TRPR) and the Nicotine Inhaling Products (Age of Sale and Proxy Purchasing) Regulations 2015. The regulations cover important aspects such as:

  • Selling a nicotine-inhaling product to anyone aged under 18 is a criminal offence.
  • Nicotine-containing e-liquids are restricted to a maximum volume of 10ml per container.
  • E-cigarette tanks are restricted to a capacity of no more than 2ml.
  • Nicotine strength in e-liquids is limited to 20mg/ml (2%).
  • All e-cigarettes and e-liquids must be notified to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

3. Myth: Vaping causes popcorn lung

Diacetyl is a chemical that is associated with a lung condition known as popcorn lung. It is banned as an ingredient in nicotine vapes and e-liquids that are regulated in the UK. Vuse products do not contain diacetyl, THC or Vitamin E acetate. These ingredients have never been added to Vuse products.

4. Myth: Batteries in vaping devices are not safe

Most e-cigarette devices use lithium-ion batteries, which are also found in many other consumer electronics. Ensuring that your vaping device meets all necessary battery safety standards is essential. Vuse products are designed with safety in mind and comply with all international and national safety requirements. To avoid damaging your Vuse product, always use the device with the equipment and charger in your kit. Your Vuse device will come with a leaflet that guides you on how to use and charge it, including the environmental conditions in which it should be used, charged, and stored.

6. Myth: E-liquid contains oils

E-liquids contain nicotine and a few flavour ingredients, with a base of propylene glycerol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) – no oils. Some e-liquids may contain oil-based flavourings, which are emulsified (mixed) with other ingredients to become water-soluble. Vegetable glycerin is a thick substance derived from plant oils, often used as a food sweetener, that helps carry nicotine in e-liquid. Because VG is derived from plant oils, e-liquids are often misrepresented as containing oils.

7: Myth: You can drink your e-liquid

Vuse and other e-liquids are not designed to be ingested. If you accidentally consume e-liquid in its liquid form, please consult a medical professional. E-liquids are designed to be heated inside vape devices, turning into an inhalable vapour. They can be dangerous if ingested as a liquid.
